Signs To Look For

Termites leave many signs pointing to an infestation. If you notice dark spots or blistering in floorboards, it typically points to termites feeding on the underside of the wood. If you notice that any wood in your house has a hollow sound to it, and if it has an interior resembling a honeycomb, then you most likely have a termite infestation. If you notice any termite wings or any dead termites on the ground, it points to swarming- behavior that points to a large infestation. If you notice ‘mud tubes’ (bits of soil, mud, and wood scraps) lining the ground, you have a termite infestation. Droppings are another sign. Don’t hesitate to call if you suspect a termite infestation, we’ll be more than happy to determine whether or not you have termites, dealing with the pest regardless of what it is.

What To Do

If you find that you do have a termite infestation, the best thing to do is to call an extermination service as soon as you can to prevent further damage. Most extermination companies don’t continue to protect the home after the infestation is gone- something that we do. Termites feast 24/7, so the solution needs to be put in place as soon as possible.

The Process

There are a wide variety of methods that can be used to treat a termite infestation. Magic Touch Extermination and Wildlife Control uses a variety of methods, using different methods depending on the scenario. We’ll first arrive at your home for an inspection. We will determine the extent of the infestation and how difficult it will be to treat. We will then see what parts of the home are hot-spots. Based on our findings, we will then create a custom plan for you. Once the plan is decided upon, we will discuss the methods and explain how we plan to rid your home of the pests. For example, we may use bait stations to draw the termites away from your home and kill off the colony.

Keeping Your Home Safe

After we remove the termites from your home, we will do annual check-ins to make sure that there are no signs of re-infestation and ensure that the termites are, in fact, staying away from your home. If we see any signs of re-infestation we will immediately begin working to rid your home of them.

How to Get Rid Of Termites?

So you suspect a termite invasion, huh? The good news is there are several DIY options for removing termites, and you can try all of these. The bad news is, that a termite infestation is a time-sensitive issue. This means the more you let them sit around your property, the less likely you are to solve the situation since the termites will multiply, and rapidly destroy the entire house.

In this article, we explore some common options for termite removal and discuss how efficient each one of these is

First, you’ll want to look for an infestation.

Before we move on to removal, we need to make sure we’re dealing with actual termites here, and not something else. There are some common warning signs that may alert you to a termite problem, such as sagging floors, or hollow parts of the foundation. Similarly, holes in the woodwork of your home may alert you to a termite problem.

Using a flashlight, and other appropriate tools, we recommend performing a quick inspection of areas like the foundation of your home, the basement, known crawl spaces, etc.

Remember you’re looking for a termite nest, and/or the presence of termite droppings. When performing your examination, you should also be wearing protective gear, and try not to interact with the termites directly.

How to get rid of termites:

  • Termiticides.

Termiticides are special chemical barriers that you spray around the exterior of your property, to keep termites off. The smart thing about termiticides is that the termites won’t actually be able to detect the termiticide, and so won’t know how to avoid it. Once a termite chews on a sprayed material, it will ingest the chemical and die.

Termiticides are also an efficient way to reduce and eliminate termites from your properties because they are similar to a virus in that, once infected, a termite will also carry the termiticide around, infecting and killing off other termites.

  • Direct Chemical Foam.

This is also a useful trick to have up your sleeve when dealing with termites. These direct chemicals are great if you want to come at the problem from within. Here’s how it works – you spray the direct chemicals into the nooks, crannies, and crevices that might make for excellent termite nesting areas. The chemical then acts pretty much like expandable foam, growing and growing to fill the entire available area, after which it disappears.

But don’t worry, even after the foam itself is gone, it leaves behind a poison trail that damages the termites and intoxicates them upon contact.

  • Baits.

You can also purchase termite baits at specialty stores, which are usually placed around the foundation of your home. Like traditional baits, these will attract the foraging termites, and employ slow-acting poison to stop their growth, and kill them. Because the poison works slowly, this also means that the termites have plenty of time to carry it back to the other termites, and infect those, also. Thus, termite baits can prove to be an extremely efficient option, as well.

  • Pest Removal.

Although the above methods can work well and can be put into action by non-professionals, by far the best and most efficient option available to you is calling a professional pest removal team. The more you wait (to try inefficient solutions), the more the termites will reproduce and the more extensive the damage to your home will be.

Should you try natural remedies?

Not really. While natural remedies like essential oils are often touted as great termite remedies, they’re actually quite inefficient, and so we wouldn’t recommend wasting time on them.

General Information

It’s best to let professionals deal with a termite infestation, as they are difficult to truly get rid of. In order to avoid re-infestation, all termites must be killed. Termites feast 24/7- they don’t stop. If you think you may have a termite infestation, it’s crucial to call a professional as soon as possible. Don’t wait- the damage will get worse.
There is only one type of termite in New York, the Subterranean Termite. This termite lives in the soil, meaning that it doesn’t live inside furniture or in the walls. This termite is identifiable by the mud tubes it creates in order to travel from their home to their feeding spot. Termites don’t use wood to build homes, it is their food source. Termites are known to swarm, and the destruction caused by a swarm can be devastating.
Termites can fit through just about any crack, so sealing off the house won’t work. Termites need to be killed in order to get rid of the infestation. Though it seems to be a daunting task, we’ll be sure to work with you the whole way through, ensuring that you understand everything that we do and why we’re doing it.
